Abstract A simple and generic model for the heat distribution in electrodes primary metal production has been investigated. The equations have analyzed focusing on understanding scale-up of under both direct current (DC) alternating (AC) conditions. analysis provides a theoretical foundation Westly’s empirical rule. For graphite small carbon electrodes, current-carrying capacity is limited by ohmic heating, which controls lateral flux temperature at electrode periphery. these higher DC than AC. large or Søderberg must be to avoid thermal stresses subsequent breakages, especially connection with shutdowns considerable fluctuations. Thermally, then maximum difference between center this case, AC can carry more DC.
